A Single Software Platform For Operational Excellence: Dream Or Reality?
According to a forthcoming Verdantix operational excellence survey, 96% of 284 operations, maintenance and engineering managers believe that an integrated software platform for safety, risk and asset integrity management, would improve their firm’s operational excellence performance. What’s the dream? A single digital platform that aggregates data from multiple sources such as inspection rounds, SCADA systems, maintenance management systems and IoT devices which offers real-time end-to-end visibility into operational performance and risks. Theoretically, this should improve production volumes, control risks and deliver better financial performance.
This popular vision is certainly influencing product development strategies. Using its Unified Operations Center, AVEVA built an integrated ‘Passenger Information System’ for China’s Ministry of Railways which aggregates data from 2 million data capture sources – such as automated ticket gates, video displays, CCTV monitors – from 220 stations. Sphera’s operational risk management (ORM) digital twin combines time, location and activity data to provide users with a cumulative view of risk created by work activity. This is informed by real-time information about maintenance schedules and mechanical integrity. Following its acquisition by Fortive, Intelex will likely provide a workflow platform for EHS and operations that pulls in data from handheld gas detectors, equipment sensors and worker-reported observations. Vendors are on the path to turning the operational excellence platform dream into reality. Most customers will want to see solid case studies of high value usage scenarios before embarking on the implementation journey.
