FDA's Food Chemical Review: A Catalyst For Safer Food

In May 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a significant reform of its chemical review process for food products. This reform represents a transition from reactive to proactive oversight through evidence-based methodologies. The initiative will examine common food additives, including butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and azodicarbonamide (ADA), utilizing a new prioritization framework. It will also incorporate stakeholder consultation to enhance transparency and safety standards within the food industry.

This shift is long overdue. Historically, inadequate oversight of food chemicals has led to serious health concerns and reputational damage. The food additive ADA sparked controversy in 2014 after consumers learned it was used in both bread products and plastic products such as yoga mats and shoe soles. ADA could cause respiratory issues and potential cancer risks when heated to high temperatures. Although it is still permitted in the US, ADA is banned in many other countries and regions, including the EU, highlighting the importance of the FDA's current review initiative as consumer and legislative pressure grows.

While this regulatory evolution strengthens food safety, it creates new challenges for manufacturers and suppliers. Organizations must navigate a complex landscape of chemical tracking, documentation and reporting requirements. Chemical compliance software has become essential, providing solutions for managing these challenges throughout the food supply chain, from ingredient tracking to regulatory documentation.

Chemical compliance solutions enable real-time monitoring of regulatory changes, automated compliance reporting and efficient safety documentation management. Their integrated approach helps organizations maintain compliance while streamlining operations, making them essential for modern food safety management.

As the industry adapts to this new era of food safety, organizations leveraging these compliance tools position themselves as leaders in both regulatory adherence and quality management. The future of food safety lies in these data-driven approaches that prioritize both consumer safety and operational efficiency.
