Executive Summary
The UK National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) is an innovative example of industrial symbiosis, where one firm’s waste becomes another firm’s input. International Synergies coordinates the NISP membership network, using regional workshops and a proprietary database to identify opportunities for members to gain mutual value by repurposing waste streams. NISP’s business-led design and operation, free participation and national network set it apart from previous industrial symbiosis projects. Over the past five years it has facilitated cumulative environmental and commercial benefits, and has attracted significant international interest from countries such as China, Brazil and South Africa. In order to build on NISP’s initial success, International Synergies must overcome challenges, such as delivering international projects, securing UK government support and realising theoretical increasing returns to scale.
