Environmental Hazard And Lone Worker Monitoring Emerge As Top Use Cases For Connected Worker Solutions

COVID-19 has caused a metamorphosis within the business world – particularly within the spectrum of EHS and operational risk management. A growing number of firms have embraced connected worker solutions such as mobile apps, proximity sensors, wearables and environmental monitors to ensure that productivity is maintained in turbulent times, while adhering to new health and safety guidelines.

In the Verdantix 2021 operational excellence global survey, 41% and 31% of the 256 respondents ranked environmental hazard monitoring and lone worker monitoring as their highest priority use cases for connected worker solutions, respectively. Blackline Safety recently announced a substantial $7.8 million deal with a US-based gas and electric utility company to provide wearables and accessories for lone worker and environmental hazard monitoring purposes.

The next highest use case for connected worker solutions was for remote assistance. Colgate-Palmolive implemented Augmentir’s connected worker platform to digitize its equipment changeover and maintenance operations and was able to save up to two hours between maintenance work notification and execution. Similarly, Tesco, the multinational grocery retailer implemented Librestream’s Onsight augmented reality (AR) platform to conduct remote audits for supply chain compliance monitoring. Connected worker solutions such as AR headsets and mobile apps allow for improved accuracy and guidance to on-site field technicians, enabling quick and easy collaboration with clients and providing expert guidance in real-time. This not only has the added benefit of helping prevent accidents in the workplace, but also works to boost productivity via labour time cost savings. The adoption of connected worker solutions is set to continue, with Verdantix analysis finding that the connected worker solutions market will grow from $2.22 billion in 2021 to $4.23 billion in 2026.
