GE Digital Launches Carbon Management Software CERius To Support Decarbonization In The Energy Industry

GE Vernova, GE Digital’s portfolio of energy decarbonization businesses, announced the launch of its carbon management software CERius™ as a limited release on September 12th. Currently available for GE Vernova clients only, the product – targeted at the energy industry – will be generally available from early 2024.

Improving carbon data quality is the top digital spending priority for net zero senior executives. 17% of respondents to the 2023 Verdantix net zero and climate risk survey stated that they will increase their carbon accounting software spending by 50% or more over the next two years, and 10% indicated the same increase for GHG reduction. As climate-related regulations all over the world become more stringent, organizations are increasingly concerned about the accuracy of their reported GHG data, as well as their progress towards decarbonization goals – especially in operations-intensive industries like power generation. GE Vernova’s CERius plans on addressing energy firms’ decarbonization challenges by offering four carbon management modules: data collection, monitoring, reporting and strategy. The key features of CERius are:

  • GHG data collection using digital twin technology for improved accuracy. The software allows users to streamline data collection from different sources. The accuracy of GHG estimates is enhanced by digital twin technology and near real-time data to better inform calculations. When tested on gas turbines, it resulted in 33% greater accuracy on Scope 1 emissions – which are the most material for power generation firms – compared to generic GHG estimations calculations.

  • Real-time data visualization for GHG tracking, from plant- to enterprise-level. The solution supports decarbonization goal tracking through dashboards. The data can be filtered and presented over different time periods: annually, quarterly, monthly or daily. An integration with GE’s Asset Performance Management software will be available in 2024, allowing a deeper dive into emissions by asset.

  • Facilitated reporting under different frameworks and standards. CERius offers cross-team collaboration tools to facilitate reporting and internal and external auditing. Data are collected and analysed in line with GHG reporting frameworks, and users can generate reports based on GHG protocol requirements. The platform enables internal benchmarking across projects and locations to highlight hotspots.

  • Net zero strategy development capabilities, including scenario analysis. The solution has a predictive analytics tool that uses machine learning to identify historical patterns in carbon emissions to model future predictions. Forecast analysis takes into consideration different abatement scenarios and can provide insight on the potential impact of different projects on the overall decarbonization strategy, from renewable energy to carbon offsets.

The carbon management software market is evolving rapidly, with players entering the market from a variety of backgrounds. With expertise in the asset performance management market and over 20,000 GE Digital customers, GE Vernova's CERius is positioned to play a valuable role in supporting energy firms in their net zero journeys, from automated data collection to real-time monitoring and decarbonization strategy implementation.
