In asset-heavy industries, inconsistent pipe and valve specifications combined with poor revision control can result in non-compliance with industry standards, safety risks from incorrect component selection and costly procurement errors. The Verdantix industrial transformation global corporate survey finds that 55% of firms view the development and implementation of plant-level process safety management (PSM) standards – including standardized pipe and valve specifications – as either a ‘number one priority’ or ‘high priority’. The same number of organizations also emphasize the importance of consolidating PSM-related data to improve compliance reporting and streamline task execution. Indeed, differences in specifications habitually arise due to the lack of a centralized, standardized reference point.

Presight Solutions is tacking a proactive approach to resolve this industry challenge. Headquartered in Norway, the firm has a multi-decade history in operational risk management (ORM) software. In collaboration with Equinor, Presight Solutions has developed PipeSpec: a solution designed to bring clarity, consistency and control to pipe and valve specification. The software provides robust status and revision numbering functionality, alongside streamlined workflows to update content, making maintaining specifications less tedious and ensuring data remains accurate and up-to-date. In this way, PipeSpec is also able to establish a common foundation for collaboration between operators, contractors and suppliers – another key initiative highlighted in our global survey, with 46% of respondents rating it as a ‘number one’ or ‘high’ priority.

With major oil and gas firms such as Gassco, OKEA and Vår Energi among its users, the PipeSpec software captures industry best practices for oil and gas facilities. It is also adaptable to other asset-intensive sectors, such as offshore wind and chemical manufacturing, that face similar challenges with specification consistency and standardization.

In operations and maintenance, knowing exactly what data are in the system matters. Offerings like PipeSpec can provide operations teams with accessible, accurate data on installed piping and valves, allowing faster, more informed decisions when planning replacements, upgrades or inspections. This not only reduces procurement costs and strengthens supplier relationships but also helps reduce asset failures and unplanned downtime, as well as improving overall asset integrity.
