Survey Insight: Mobile EHS Applications Find Steady Growth As Decision-Makers Leverage Innovation

Verdantix recently released its sixth annual EHS global survey of 411 EHS decision-makers across 25 industries and 35 countries. Among the survey findings, 60% of respondents reported that they perceive innovation as a high priority for the EHS function and a further 23% believe it is essential. No longer is the EHS function overlooked as firms continue to innovate and digitise their business functions. EHS decision-makers have identified the benefits that an increasing focus on innovation can yield in their efforts to protect workers, reduce risk and ensure quality.

“This survey unarguably illustrates a sea change in the attitude of EHS managers towards the mission of the EHS function,” commented Steve Bolton, Verdantix Research Director. “Gone are the days when cost effective compliance topped the priority list. This benchmark of EHS plans for 2019 demonstrates the EHS community is doubling down on innovation and technology.”

One technology that EHS decision-makers are adopting is mobile EHS applications. As firms expand their use of mobile devices for business activities, mobile EHS applications are becoming more common in the industrial landscape as well. Concurrent with the increased adoption of EHS software covering a wide range of requirements, vendors are now offering mobile solutions to a workforce becoming more digitally connected. EHS mobile applications provide firms the ability to train, audit, inspect, manage and comply in ways that desktop-based platforms cannot.

In the survey, we asked EHS decision-makers to what extent they would use EHS mobile applications in their operations during 2019. The results show that 74% of respondents expect to be using this technology, with 34% using it across all operations and 40% using it at multiple facilities. Some EHS software vendors, such as Enablon, Cority, Gensuite, Intelex and VelocityEHS, have invested in developing strong mobile solutions. Not surprisingly, these vendors scored as the top 5 EHS vendors for their mobile capabilities within the most recent Verdantix Green Quadrant study (see Green Quadrant EHS Software 2017). With many emerging technologies—such as augmented reality—embracing mobile delivery, mobile applications for EHS are primed to continue this demonstrated growth and importance within the market. Vendors that understand this growing need will maximize their traction among corporate EHS customers.
