Executive Summary

The global scope of manufacturing in the consumer electronics sector, the fragmentation of suppliers, the costs involved and the lack of visibility make building a sustainable supply chain a significant endeavour. This report helps decision-makers in supply chain, procurement, corporate communications and sustainability roles to benchmark their sustainable supply chain strategy by analysing the approaches of 12 global consumer electronics firms, including Microsoft, Nokia and Toshiba, with aggregate revenues of $977 billion. Verdantix analysis reveals that firms in the consumer electronics sector have different sustainable supply chain strategies. US-based firms, including Apple, Dell and HP, perform well on disclosure and have broad engagement initiatives with suppliers; those headquartered in Asia, including Canon, Hitachi, Panasonic and Samsung, are less transparent and prioritize environmental initiatives with suppliers over social programmes.
