Sustainability Reporting Hits A Plateau As The Number Of Reports Using The GRI Guidelines Falls For The First Time

According to the GRI database of sustainability reports, the number of firms which publicly disclosed their use of the GRI framework was lower in 2016 than 2015 (see infographic below). Despite GRI adoption growing at a 39% CAGR from 2005 to 2010 and 17% CAGR from 2010 to 2015, the number of sustainability and CSR reports following GRI standards declined by 1.5% for the first time from 2015 to 2016. While factors such as imperfect data collection processes may be at play, trend analysis indicates that GRI adoption has been slowing significantly in any case to a single digit growth rate. Amid reports on the number of firms disclosing to the CDP (formerly the ‘Carbon Disclosure Project’), it appears that the corporate world has reached a plateau in sustainability reporting.
