Are Real-Time Worker Monitoring, Virtual Reality And Mobile-Centric Software The Future Of EH&S Management? HCS Thinks So

In early December, Verdantix visited the New York offices of Human Condition Safety (HCS) to experience first-hand their virtual reality training platform, digitally-connected safety vests and mobile software applications. Founded in 2014 and backed by AIG, HCS is an early-stage start-up that applies IoT and predictive analytical tools to prevent workplace injuries at high risk industries such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing, energy and basic resources. Even in modern day 2016, the International Labour Organisation estimates that over 6,300 employees die from occupational hazards per day globally.

HCS is currently at the tail end of completing its pilot test-runs for construction site telemetric offerings with Bechtel, Citi Field and Turner Construction. Their three core solutions will cover: 1. Mobile-centric software applications with location tracking and geo-fencing, 2. cloud-connected safety vests that record motion, heart rate, temperature and other data and 3. VR training modules (both custom and out-of-the-box). AIG’s partnership with HCS trails the path of a proven business model adopted by insurers such as Liberty Mutual, Travelers’ and The Hardford who have offered premium discounts of up to 15% for fleets with telematics installed.

HCS joins a dizzying array of entrepreneurial firms at the cutting-edge of EH&S technology innovations. The nascent but fast-growing landscape includes not only wearables, mobile apps and virtual reality but also remote-controlled air and ground vehicles, augmented reality and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. Other trail-blazers include Maersk Oil using Cyberhawk drones for hazardous facility inspections, DAQRI providing hard hats with augmented reality retractable visors and 3M Active Safety using RFID tags for personal protective equipment (PPE) management. While the majority of EH&S executives currently self-assess themselves as technology laggards, Verdantix anticipates the ambitious digital transformation agendas will force business leaders to assess and evaluate new IT solutions.

To learn more about these technologies and real world usage examples, attend the Verdantix Summit, “Achieving EH&S Excellence With Innovative Technologies” taking place at the JW Marriott in Houston from May 15-17, 2017.
