Executive Summary

AI language models use various statistical techniques to determine the probability of a given sequence of words occurring in a sentence. Interest in this technology has increased, following the release of ChatGPT in November 2022. ChatGPT’s broad capabilities have made it one of the fastest growing consumer applications, with several competitors looking to develop their own models. Many businesses have begun to leverage its capabilities for their own services. However, all new technology has its challenges, and ChatGPT is no exception. Sceptics have several concerns, regarding data privacy, the quality of work produced and the opportunities for plagiarism that the technology creates. This report is intended to highlight some examples of early use of ChatGPT among EHS executives, and assess whether the technology could become a central feature of EHS functions in the future.
