Executive Summary

Although the origins of the metaverse date back to 1992, interest in the topic has surged over the past two years. This attention has been driven by major technology players such as Facebook and Microsoft, who have both launched their own metaverse platforms. Facebook has in fact gone a step further, changing its name to Meta to reflect a shift in its focus towards the metaverse. However, this technology is still in its infancy. Experts remain unsure what the metaverse actually is and what its future holds. This report is intended to provide EHS executives with some clarity regarding the status of the metaverse, as well as to highlight early use cases and to assess whether it could become a central feature of EHS functions in the future.
