Executive Summary

Manufacturers – and operators of other industrial processes – use massive quantities of energy; their fates are thus wedded to how the energy transition plays out. At the same time, many industrial processes, such as steel foundries or fertilizer production, cannot currently be run economically without fossil fuels. To establish how sustainability and operational leaders at industrial firms are preparing – and investing – for the energy transition, Verdantix surveyed 75 such leaders in Australia, the UK and the US. With insights into how these decision-makers see their electricity demand and supply shaping up, and views on the electrification of their core industrial processes, this report provides technology and services strategists with vital information to support their product and marketing efforts.
The great wave of industrial electrification is on the horizon
Today, most industrial decarbonization stems from on-site renewables and efficiency gains
Industrial electrification will hit its stride over the coming 15 years
For industrial users, both supply and demand for clean power will rise over the next five years
In five years, many electrified industrial processes will break through to the mainstream
Electrified cooling, EVs and batteries will dominate new industrial energy plays
Methodology for the Verdantix global corporate survey on energy transition in industrial firms
Figure 1. On-site renewable energy is the area most commonly cited as high impact for decarbonization up to 2030
Figure 2. The likelihood of core industrial processes being electrified rises rapidly to 2040
Figure 3. Several forms of industrial electrification will see broad adoption by 2030
Figure 4. Respondents are evenly split across three roles: plant management, sustainability and operations
Figure 5. Two-thirds of respondents work in manufacturing; one-third in oil and gas or mining
