Executive Summary

In late 2022, the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI initiated a flurry of activity and hype regarding the use of generative AI (GenAI). Unlike ‘traditional’ AI – which has been steadily gaining traction and growing more advanced over the last decade – GenAI allows users to create something new, such as a fictional story, based on only a few user prompts. Over the past year, corporates have leveraged the capabilities of GenAI for a variety of use cases, with the sustainability office no exception. This report highlights some ways that chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and other sustainability leaders can leverage GenAI in their reporting and management decisions. The report also looks at some of the specific challenges heads of sustainability face when using GenAI and considers how they can overcome those obstacles.
