Executive Summary

This report offers a detailed, fact-based comparison of the 21 most prominent ESG and sustainability reporting software providers in the market. Based on the proprietary Verdantix Green Quadrant methodology, our analysis comprised two-hour live product demonstrations with pre-set scenarios and vendor responses to a 107-point questionnaire covering 14 functional and 10 market momentum categories. Capabilities were assessed across the following categories: data acquisition and architecture; data management; configurability; data quality control and enhancement; organizational structure; user interface; business intelligence and analytics; non-regulated reporting; regulated and mandated frameworks; materiality assessments; workflows and auditability; engagement tools; sustainability performance management; and benchmarking. Verdantix also conducted interviews with software customers of the assessed vendors and reviewed the data from our global corporate survey of 400 ESG and sustainability decision-makers. Over the past six months, the ESG and sustainability market has undergone a pivotal shift, with a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape. However, one constant remains: the need to ensure that sustainability data meet the same standards of accuracy and auditability as financial data. Among the providers featured in the Leaders’ quadrant, six firms – Benchmark Gensuite, Cority, Sphera, Watershed, Wolters Kluwer and Workiva – demonstrated the most comprehensive and evolved sustainability reporting management capabilities.
