On February 1st, Enablon, a Wolters Kluwer business, announced a strategic partnership with Makersite, which offers carbon management software for manufacturing supply chains. Founded in 2018 and based in Germany, Makersite takes a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach to enable product design and procurement decision-making. This partnership will allow Enablon to combine its existing carbon management and net zero offering  with Makersite’s solution to enhance its insights for upstream and downstream Scope 3 emissions (see Verdantix Green Quadrant: Enterprise Carbon Management Software 2022).

A recently published Verdantix Supply Chain Sustainability Survey revealed that most business leaders in retail, consumer goods manufacturing and transport manufacturing lacked confidence in calculating and reporting their Scope 3 emissions (see Verdantix Strategic Focus: Shining A Spotlight On Scope 3 Emissions Preparedness).

Managing Scope 3 emissions for decarbonization is challenging, as complex supply chains – often containing thousands of suppliers – generate inaccurate secondary emissions data that isn’t granular enough to aid emission reduction measures. As Scope 3 emissions account for around 70% of a typical firm’s emissions inventory, regulators and stakeholders are putting pressure on businesses to address them. In a Verdantix corporate survey, 68% of firms stated that supply chain decarbonization was a high or very high priority – while only 2% responded that it wasn’t a priority.

This collaboration between Enablon and Makersite follows OneTrust’s acquisition of carbon-specialist Planetly in late 2021. We can expect to see more partnerships, mergers and acquisitions combining specialized accounting processes with decarbonization services, as vendors aim to provide increasingly focused solutions for supply chain decarbonization.
