Introduction
In May 2007 IBM announced that it would “redirect” $1 billion per year to dramatically increase the energy efficiency of data centres. The success, or lack of success, of IBM’s Big Green strategy is important for the market because it sets the tempo for the rollout of similar strategies from other IT services firms. What has IBM learnt after investing its first $1 billion? The vision for Big Green has expanded dramatically from a focus on 1% of emissions generated by data centres to the 2% generated by IT and also the 98% from other business operations.
