Executive Summary

On March 10 2011, HP announced the launch of its new Energy and Sustainability Management (ESM) initiative. HP’s ESM initiative takes an enterprise-wide view and aims to provide energy and sustainability services to all business functions. The initiative draws on the IT services and business consulting expertise from the acquisition of EDS in 2008 and EYP Mission Critical Facilities in 2007. The initial portfolio focuses on energy and resource efficiency data collection, sustainability baseline measurements, and advisory work on energy efficiency, carbon reduction and water efficiency programmes. Launch day partners in the HP ESM ecosystem are competing energy and environment software start-ups C3 and Hara. The HP ESM vision is to ’redefine how companies manage energy and natural resources’. To deliver on this ambitious vision, HP needs to expand its partner ecosystem, clarify the competitive boundaries with other global services firms, build incremental revenues outside IT projects, and create a unifying strategy that harnesses resources across HP and captures the imagination of customers and employees.
